How an Obamacare Remnant Survives and Prospers in Montana

Despite the collapse of health-insurance cooperatives under the Affordable Care Act in the mid-2010s, the Montana-based Mountain Health Co-op managed to overcome financial challenges and secure a $15 million loan, enabling its survival. Currently, it stands as one of the three remaining Obamacare-created co-ops in the United States. With coverage extending to approximately 55,000 individuals across Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming in 2023, Mountain Health Co-op holds nearly 40% of the individual health insurance market in Montana.
